Sunday Sum - 2nd July 2023

πŸ—ž Tom's Sunday Summary - 2nd July 2023

Hey , welcome back to

The Sunday Summary

, a collection of insights and my behind the scenes from the past week.

πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’» A lifestyle hack:Patch - Your Neighbourhood WorkspaceI've always seen co-working spaces in London and thought; "I wish I had a business, or a reason to work in a co-working space", but... I have a dedicated office/room at home, so it's counter intuitive to pay for a space that I have to travel to? Right, that's stupid! And arguably I have better coffee facilities and resources at home. But then it clicked... it's not always rational to quantify through the lens of money. Here's the current work from home realities:

  1. I work at home by myself. That's boring in itself

  2. There's a lack of accountability. Because no-one is watching, I can delay starting, goof off when I want.  I've often considered just hiring someone to sit in the corner to help keep me on task.

  3. Home has distractions; dirty dishes, hoovering, TV, the postie. When resistance strikes, these are all fantastic endeavours!

  4. I rarely leave the house unless it's to go to work in the taxi

And here's why I need to look beyond the approx Β£25 a day for a co-working space:

  1. I enjoy working. Being able to work in a beautiful space is a pleasurable experience. I don't spend money on drinking or other "pleasures" so I can spend it here.

  2. Accountability goes far beyond work output. Example; I'm less likely to slouch if there's an office of people able to look over at me!

  3. It gets me out of the house, I even get to cycle there for a bit of exercise I wouldn't normally be getting!

  4. There is a lack of distractions, as I get to leave home, at home.  No more random hoovering stints.

  5. It creates a separation between home and office.  When I get home, it's home tasks and enjoyment. No more emails or editing.

  6. I've gotten way more value than the cost of entry out of spaces in the past, i.e. coffee shops, previous business office space, etc.  In the long run, I'm most certainly on top!

So,

I joined

.

There's still doubts of in my head like; "

this is crazy Β£150 a month! You can't afford this! Your gym membership is only Β£40

" or "

just be super frugal, and be more dedicated when you work at home

It's a wonderful experiment to try for a few months.  I won't die, and I'm likely to enjoy the process.

If I optimised through a held lens of "earn as much as you can, minimise spend", then I'd just live out of my taxi and work 7 days a week.  My YouTube work won't be around forever, so as long as there is a viewership, I'm going to lean into it and give it the attention it deserves!

πŸ–₯️ Another desktop purchase:NEXSTAND K2 Laptop StandCoinciding with the above, I purchased this super portable laptop stand. Surprising just how much it transforms my working experience, and it also lets me use my laptop as a second monitor when I dock it at home!πŸ“– A book I'm loving:Dark Matter - Blake CrouchI READ A FICTION! (my first since Harry Potter!)This book had me gripped!  Super excited to learn that it’s been picked up for production on AppleTV! If you love parallel universes, the road not taken etc.  This is for you.  Could not put this down on my recent trip to ZA.πŸ§ͺ πŸŽ₯ Videos in the making:The London No-Traffic Light Challenge!I'm super excited for this one, long time subscribers may remember I did a small version of this 2 years ago. This time, I'm going to attempt to drive to all 23 London boroughs that feature on The Knowledge of London, without driving through traffic lights (sort of).City Airport shiftMany of you loved Heathrow Airport, but how does City airport work?
