🗞Tom's Sunday Summary - 30th April 2023
Hey , welcome back to
The Sunday Summary
, a collection of insights and my behind the scenes from the past week.
📖 A book I'm reading:Hyperfocus: How to Work Less to Achieve More - Chris BaileyWhilst my life is highly un-optimised (there’s a lot of room for improvement). I do enjoy a good productivity book. My initial thoughts on this one so far, I instantly want to remove all the low level background hum from my day/work, so I can clearly focus on the task at hand. Reminding myself that multi-tasking is never a good option, but even the idea of a lingering thought is incredibly detrimental to productivity. On a separate note. Do you know that just having your phone on the table beside you (not actively using it or paying attention to it), will zap you of cognitive resource and thus the ability to concentrate? Fascinating stuff!🏋🏻 A gym hack:Gym mid taxi shiftLong time subscribers of the Sunday Summary will know that I’ve dabbled with various attempts to work exercise into my daily/weekly routine. Sometimes I get a good streak, but life throws a variable and back to the beginning I go. I mentioned morning cycling, the road bike has very quickly become an office ornament! So here’s my latest hack.Listening to my body and energy level. I identified that I always have an urge for resistance training when in the cab, around 7pm/8pm. It could be due to “wow I’ve sat in this seat for 4/5 hours straight, I really should move”. I’ve joined a gym brand with various locations across London, so proximity is less of an excuse. So far it’s been great, and if I look at it from the time efficiency lens, this also ticks the boxes. All I need to do is take a gym bag and it’s as easy at going to work itself! Will keep you posted on the results.📻 A new radio station: Smooth ChillHow haven’t I found this radio station sooner? This is ultimate for my zen bubble taxi. I’ve always gone for radio x for the most passenger friendly listening (if they were to hear it at the low volume I have it). But it soon gets repetitive. Smooth Chill is the one for now!
🎧 An audiobook I'm loving:
Felix Dennis passed in 2014. I only came across his book in 2021, making its words so much more poignant. A man speaking of great riches, how he amassed them, the life it allowed him to live. Yet he is no longer with us. Seeing it released on Audible, I was worried that a half arsed narrator would completely ruin this classic. I’m pleased to say that it’s probably some of the best Audible narration I’ve ever come across. It must have been a challenge as Dennis was a poetic wordsmith, but great care and consideration has clearly been taken. My highlight; somewhere near the beginning, Dennis notes if he was to do it all over again. He’d build a sizeable wealth by age 35. Then call it a day and sit and write poetry, rather than chase for more.
