👍 The Sunday Summary - 3rd April 2022

Sunday Summary from Tom the Taxi Driver

Hey , Welcome back to my Sunday Summary, a collection of insights and my behind the scenes from the past week.

💂‍♂️ A London Experience:Aldwych abandoned tube station tourOn the one hand, I had been excited to get into an “abandoned station”.  I love to fill in the terra incognita I have for London (effectively unmapped regions in my brain, “what’s behind that door?” Or “what’s under there?”). But on the other hand, it’s almost akin to visiting an underground station late at night. What I did find fascinating were the maps and old posters. Our guide pointed out that some of these were fakes for film sets, and others (like the one featured below) were originals dating back to the 70’s.The station and platforms are frequently used as a filming location, despite the fact there is no working elevators and just a stair shaft akin to Covent Garden.  My favourite mention was the video for Firestarter by The Prodigy.  Combined with the fact that Keith Flint purchased his iconic Stars and Stripes jumper from Camden Market on the day of the shoot.  I can just imagine those lads and the route they took. (Down Eversholt Street, down Southampton Row and into the Kingsway for Aldwych). The station closed in 1994. If you are interested in booking this or similar experiences, check out the London Transport Museum website.🎧 A audiobook I'm re-listening to:   Alcohol Explained 2: Tools for a Stronger Sobriety - William PorterFeeling compelled to drink and to hopefully remove all triggers for my skin issues. This series of quit-lit is probably the most effective I’ve come across, largely because of the way it dispels the myths society tells us about alcohol. I find it effective as it reframes how I look at alcohol, as apposed to the “oh go on mate, one will never hurt ya!”. Debunking things like “needing to drink on holiday”, that “ahh moment after a long day at work” and why “stealing happiness from tomorrow” is complete rubbish📖 I'm currently reading:How to Be Human: The Ultimate Guide to Your Amazing Existence - New ScientistDespite being a heavyish book (432 pages), I was instantly attracted to the short chapters and even shorter sub-headings.  It reminds me of some of the fact books I used to read in my teens, but with a bit more info to the statements it provides.  It’s stimulating and covers a lot of topics, very easy to dive in and out of.🧠 I’m getting a brain scan!:Taxi Brains Study - Prof Hugo Spiers - UCLUCL have invited me to be part of their Taxi Brains study. We’ve known for a while that the hippocampus (the part of the brain associated with memory and recall) is physically larger in cabbies. But this current study hopes to discover if there is a link between this and lower risk of Alzheimer’s.Selfishly, I have particular intrigue for this, suffering from a TBI (traumatic brain injury) 16 years ago, as well as having 2x copies of the APoe4 gene (statistically I am 20x more likely to develop alzhemiers, thanks Mum and Dad!). I will be filming what I can of the experience and sharing with you all on the channel 😊
