🌴 Tom's Sunday Summary - 3rd March 2024
Hey , welcome back to
The Sunday Summary
, a collection of insights and my behind the scenes from the past week.
🇰🇭 Travel Update:I’m now certified as an Advanced PADI open water diver, achieving my qualification on the Cambodian island of Koh Rong. There wasn't a great deal else on this island, just a few basic restaurants that all seemed to have the same menu as one another.I've since moved up to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia to see the killing fields and S21 genocide prison. Before moving on to Siem Reap for the elusive Angkor Wat temple complex!
🌴 Moments of thought and reflection:Finishing up my travels. It’s been almost 9 weeks since I left the UK for my awesome unplanned adventure, and I will be finishing in the next week or so. This has been my first long term(ish) solo travel adventure. I will be making a lot of videos for my personal channel about what I discovered and how I overcame obstacles whilst travelling. It's very strange just how quickly travelling becomes part of your identity, and it's hard to associate with the time and distance from my former life in the UK. That being said...
I don’t think I enjoy long term travel (at least anything longer than 2 months).
I bumped into a few travellers on my way. Who were super long term. We are talking 6 months upwards. In a previous life this would have been my envy, and whilst I’d love to have the option to conduct my work anywhere in the world, it isn’t something I would actively want to seek out.I love; rhythm, routine, graft, riding my bike, decent coffee, hot shaves. It's not to put me off travelling entirely, but to know that there is a sweet spot for me.
Long term travel is difficult. It’s tiring. It’s stressful thinking about how and where to move on. Ideally and my tip for next time, would be to stay longer at each stop. I spent a month in Thailand but there was still lots of moving around. I spent over 2 weeks in Vietnam but 5 days of this was Da Nang.
Overall after about the 5th week. Travel become a bit boring. It's all temple tours, caves, kayaking waterfalls etc. I almost needed to go back to the UK reset my hedonic baseline. It's all incredible here but seeing so many incredible sights you take it for granted. You also question; "Why am I travelling? Am I travelling for the sake of travelling?" It’s quite hard to understand your true motivations and intentions when you are always moving.I certainly have learnt ALOT about myself!
📺 What I'm Watching:World's Fastest Camera Drone Vs F1 Car (ft. Max Verstappen)Not only is the technology astounding how a drone can keep up with an F1 car, but the shots it delivers completely changes the perspective of F1. For the first time you can really appreciate the speed of F1 cars. It’s also quite therapeutic following the drone through each of the corners.
📔
My constant whilst travelling:
I've journaled everyday of my travels, it has helped me captured relish emotions I didn't realise I was capable of feeling. It's catalogued some of the nuanced detail of my travel that would have been lost to memory.
Thoughts, fears, anxieties, triumphs, wins, how it felt exactly in the moment. It’s hard to say right now because I’m in that moment but I’d imagine that this trip will be a huge catalyst in my life going forward, and to have a fairly detailed journal is like capturing the exact moment those pivotal moments were born!
It also convenient syncs between iPhone and desktop, so you have no excuse not to keep it a regular habit.
🎧
On heavy rotation:Gortex - AWON & Parental (feat. Debonair P)
This whole album has been suggested to me by Apple Music and I’m loving it. It reminds of when the Kendrick Lamar album dropped. That raw up and coming freestyle.
Goretex just has a real reflective edge. Makes me miss putting on a bit jacket and going out in the rain. (I’ve only seen proper rain once since being out here!).
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Please feel free to reach out to me with your; comments, concerns or just general conversation.
I'd love to know what you're up to or what you might be working on!
