🗞 Tom's Sunday Summary - 3rd September 2023

Hey , welcome back to
The Sunday Summary
, a collection of insights and my behind the scenes from the past week.
🇩🇰 🎤 A non-London experience:Another commentary gig!Extending my foray into the microphone, I was invited to Aarhus, Denmark to provide commentary for the UCI World Cup!Slightly different format than the world championships in Glasgow, rather than commentating on a live stream for the BBC (I would argue slightly easier because I can point out nuanced details in riders, such as “ooh wow did you see his tyre slip?”), this was an arena format, effectively MCing the event 😳. A different skill set entirely but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.I'm currently sat in Jumbo coffee, resisting the temptation to consume my 3rd danish pastry of the morning! 🥐☕️💂🏻♀️🛶 A London experienceChoosing discomfort - Hyde ParkI’ve never done the pedal boats on the serpentine in Hyde Park. Initially lured in with the offer of £14 per hour, I thought it was a bargain. (Turns out it was £14 per hour per person, that’s a similar pricing structure to a rickshaw! Thanks King Charles!)Whilst following the majority, waiting for previous boats to be returned, I noticed a couple of row boats to the right. I asked if they were available. “You want a tow boat? Of course?”Row boating was hella difficult, but what an experience. It was a great way to live by 2 of my decision making heuristics; don’t follow the herd and pick the more difficult option (or the chance to grow more) if you have an equal decision.I got a greater and more memorable experience, to row to the serpentine bridge was an absolute slog! But the challenge was far more memorable than just lazily cruising my way there! It’s not exactly a life changing decision, but peppering life with these minute decisions I believe make the experience MUCH richer!📖 🤯 A book that's blowing my mind:The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desire - David DeidaWow so many mic drops in this one (fortunately I didn’t do that in Aarhus). Put off reading this one for a while thinking it might be a bit wishy washing or overly repitive, but wish I read this sooner. The chapters are so short and concise it’s immediately actionable and immediately digestible, the issue with most self improvement stuff is that it’s wrapped up in a lot of fluff, it almost lets you off the hook before you have begun. Where as with this book it’s almost like a checklist, I paused after each chapter to really think about how I show up in my life and could take the most action from this book. This is one of those books like The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, that you can’t quite un-see once you’ve seen it. Definitely going to fall into the life changing category for me.
😎 A life redesign:MinimalismA slight change in life circumstances have prompted me to look at my life again through the lens of minimalism. This was a practice I took to heavily when I was on The Knowledge and arguably one of the most powerful interventions I’ve ever done to augment the quality of my life.Basically as we become more settled in life, it’s only natural to accumulate stuff. This isn’t inherently a problem, the lack of intentionality is a problem. When big life moments happen, it’s often a prompt to look around and reassess. “Why have I got so much junk in the attic?” “I haven’t used this piece of tech in months, will I use it again soon?” Or “does this sweater bring value to my life?”. It's certainly counter to most people’s change in life circumstances which usually prompts a response of; “let’s go out and buy everything!”
💬 🛬 A plane ponder:
“Weekend = Weakened ” Just my general ethos to taking a break on weekends, or using it as an opportunity to "let loose".In fact extending it further, there's no actual existence of a week in time! We have days because of the sun, months roughly because of the moon, years for orbit of the sun. Where do weeks come into it? It's just a construct (religion I guess). Is it enabling you, or making you weaker?
🎧 On heavy rotation:Frenic - Get Out of DodgeVery heavy rotation I might add! 😍
📺 On YouTube this week:This has been an idea for a while. It’s my way of combing the tour guiding videos I enjoy, but the maps and navigation that come from my shift videos. I wanted to get up close and personal to the history in London and share this with you all. Please let me know your thoughts, suggestions or anything you’d like to see on future episodes! I’m hoping these videos will be less of a heavy lift, meaning my upload schedule can be more predictable (shift videos take almost a full week from filming to final edit!)
