🍕 A London experience

Pizza collection vs. takeaway (a short story)

Something I've been mulling over.

On Wednesday after a long day of working on YouTube. I went with my girlfriend to Central London for a fun summer evening. We took the Frisbee and headed to Hyde Park. However, craving dinner in the park, I thought of Pizza Pilgrims, (awesome if you haven’t had it!) We opted for takeaway to enjoy inside the park. To my surprise, the collection price was the same as eating in!

I questioned the justification for the same price when I was taking it away. I wasn’t inconveniencing the restaurant and was “missing out” on the full dining experience. I considered having sandwiches in the park instead.

Then, I realised there’s a factor that’s hard to quantify with price: novelty. I’ve eaten in Pizza Pilgrims before, and it’s a nice experience. But I feared that if I had eaten in just to maximise the cost, this experience could have been overshadowed by my previous visits. To truly sell and differentiate this day, creating a memory dividend, we took takeaway pizza to nearby Hyde Park to eat and people-watch.

A curious dog approached us in Kensington Gardens near Queensway, sniffing our hot honey, mushroom, and truffle pizza options. We observed fellow park-goers. The man behind us became increasingly stoned, and his music choices on the loudspeaker became erratic. I wondered what allowed these people to relax in a park on a Wednesday evening. I was almost unaware that I was doing the same thing myself.

Eating pizza outdoors offered an unobserved value. It was the same price as indoors, but it provided a whole new experience that is now what Bill Perkins would call a “memory dividend” (from his phenomenal book, Die With Zero).

🗣️ AI tech I’m still loving!

This is still blowing my mind. To the point that when I try voice dictation with iOS or Siri, it just feels so dumb! Wispr Flow even has a dictionary of words, that automatically update if ever you edit a word (rarely).

This piece of tech has enabled me to blitz emails, as well as get back to the task of writing my second book! (I’m not putting any dates on it, but it’s coming!).

🎵 On heavy rotation

Reflective chilled hip hop. Cheers to Apple Music for recommending this one!

🎧 A book I’m re-listening to as an audiobook

The blurb nails exactly the tone and vibe of this book.

“Where can a tin of tuna buy you clean clothes? Which British education system struggles with 50 percent illiteracy? Where do teetotal Muslims attend AA meetings? Where is it easier to get 'spice' than paracetamol? Where does self-harm barely raise an eyebrow?”

This is illuminating of the scale of the problem British prisons face. It’s hilarious, it’s poignant, it’s chilling.
